The solution for the
Italian energy transition.
The Pangea project represents the way FRI-EL GEO is working to reduce CO2 emissions, decrease reliance on fossil fuel sources, and lower bills for citizens and businesses by providing heat for district heating or important industries: this is our challenge!
A geothermal power plant integrated with a district heating system provides thermal energy from a reliable source, with no greenhouse gas emissions, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with accurate forecasts of the quantities delivered. Such a plant can cover the baseload demand of the district heating network. In the event of a surplus of thermal energy during the summer, the plant can store the excess heat for use in winter, adapting to seasonal demand and ensuring an extremely programmable and flexible supply.
Potential impact of Pangea
- Save over 17 million tons of CO2 in 50 years.
- About 2 million MWh of thermal energy produced per year.
- Saved 7 billion cubic meters of methane gas in 50 years.
- 0.5 hectares of land use during operation per single project
- At least 50 years of operation with low maintenance costs.
- Supply of programmable and constant thermal energy.
Pangea project: background of opportunity
'We need to focus on renewables. Italy is one of the best countries in the world for geothermal energy, neglecting it is a shame'
Prof. Giorgio Parisi, Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Sapienza University of Rome, Vice-President of the Accademia dei Lincei, Nobel Prize winner for Physics
The strong regulatory push to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, along with recent geopolitical developments in Europe, has made it increasingly important to enhance national energy independence from natural gas imports.
Over the past two years, FRI-EL GEO has been able to identify potential geothermal areas to install extraction plans. Through exploratory wells and seismic surveys, the company has identified potential geothermal reservoirs located close to major urban centres in Northern and Central Italy that already have district heating networks, or have the predisposition, to connect geothermal plants.
FRI-EL GEO, together with a group of specialists in the geothermal sector, has demonstrated that low to medium enthalpy closed-loop geothermal plants would drastically improve the Italian energy mix. The first cutting-edge project is already under construction in Ostellato, in the province of Ferrara, where high-tech greenhouses will be powered by a geothermal plant.
The key components of the geothermal system:
- Doppietti (Two wells) for the extraction and reinjection of fluids into the reservoir.
- Thermal power plant for heat exchange.
- Connection to the heat to district heating

The benefits of Pangea
How can we satisfy the growing national demand for energy and at the same time reduce CO2 emissions? The geothermal technology at closed-cycle (binary cycle) and mid-enthalpy allows the use of the natural terrestrial heat to produce clean energy.

Italy's unexplored geothermal treasure trove
The Po Valley of Italy is an area with high potential for deep geothermal power due to the presence of numerous permeable reservoirs and suitable aquifers. The northern part of Italy is particularly suitable to satisfy the huge demand of energy. Pangea is the tool that allows us to sustainably optimise the use of Italy’s thermal power.
